Earthquake in Looe

Earthquake At Half Past Midnight

On 27th May 1782 - Looe

I felt the shock of an earthquake,  it was accompanied by a noise like distant thunder,

I was struck by the idea how such distant thunder should shake my bed candlestick. …

.... On coming downstairs next morning, I said to my servant that I believed

there was an earthquake last night.  The answer was that many people of the town were speaking of it.

I afterwards heard it was felt in Liskeard.”

Recorded by the Reverend Milles of Looe.
